No, I am not dating a guy name Mr. Darcy if that is what you thinking.
Me and Mr. Darcy is a book that given to me by a dear friend. This book is about a single New Yorker – Emily Albright who is a book store manager and had a string of bad date’s stories to tell. She is also a dying fan of Jane Austen and her ideal man would be Mr. Darcy the main fictional character from The Pride & Prejudice.
Instead of New Year holidays in Mexico with friend she decided to go on a tour of Jane Austen country. Her spirit in dented when she found out that her group is mostly older woman and the only person close to her age group is a journalist, Spike Hargeaves who she dislike at first sign. Spike Hargreaves, sent by his paper to discover why Mr. Darcy is the fantasy dream date of most British women.
During the tour Emily literally walk into Mr. Darcy! (Like the super real Mr. Darcy from The Pride and Prejudice) They even have few dates on several occasions. It is funny to find out that in modern days Mr. Darcy might not be the ideal man at all. There is one occasion where Emily is in a distress situation and so happy to see Mr. Darcy that she throw herself to Mr. Darcy hoping for a hug. All Mr. Darcy did was holding his hands beside him without moving, because it is “inappropriate” to hug a lady! (Those things with the olden day’s culture)
Imagine yourself in that situation, you are dying for a hug to mend a broken heart and all your man did is just standing there doing nothing to defend your reputation. I think i will go crazy before my reputation go crazy! hahahhahaha
Mr. Darcy also mentioned that he thinks a woman’s place is in house taking care of the household instead of having a job when he found that Emily is working as bookstore manager. He might be a dream date for most of British woman but in modern days I bet he will not fit in well. But never the less we modern ladies sometimes still misses the chivalry* where can only be found in Mr. Darcy. As the gentler sex, it is good to be pampered.
The Pride and Prejudice has been made in to movies .I still remembers that Collin Firth played Mr. Darcy in a BBC adaptation of the novel in 1995. I can’t remember much of the show now but strangely there is one scene that I can remember vividly till today.
In the book, there is a part where Emily was standing at the lake side where they film the show. This is the lake where Collin Firth/Mr. Darcy emerges from the lake after a swim. Emily was talking how sexy Collin Firth/Mr. Darcy looks in that show.
When I read that, I can recall the scene. I remember that the water of the lake is a bit murky (I won’t swim in a lake with water that color) and he swim thru a bunch of water plant. When he emerges from the lake, his masculine body is seen thru his wet shirt (Being Mr. Darcy he will not be half naked in the public).
It’s a strange feeling that I exactly feel the same as Emily Albright and I know what she is talking about! And I watch that show ages ago but somehow that scene is embedded in my memories.
*Chivalry is a term relating to the medieval institution of knighthood. It is usually associated with ideals of knightly virtues, honor and courtly love. Today, the terms chivalry and chivalrous are used to describe courteous behavior, especially that of men towards women.
